The Magic of Inkheart

Beware of spoilers!

I read books to forget. It's probably the most common reason for picking up a tome and losing oneself in a different world for hours on end. I'd much rather be breathing fire with Dustfinger than dealing with real problems. When I walk the paths of the Inkworld in the company of the Bluejay and his companions, I become one of them. Despite adversity book characters face, they always manage to overcome it. Even if they can't see that light shining at the end of the tunnel, the reader knows that good will triumph over evil. It might not be in the way we expect, but evil, 9 times out of 10, loses. Isn't that what we expect when reading a book?

And that is also what makes books so different than life. Here is where Cornelia Funke differs from most authors. In some ways, I think she realizes that a happy ending isn't necessarily the wisest route. There can be goodness that occurs out of tragedy, but it doesn't make the tragedy any less poignant for…
